Applications open for LPSS-funded in-home internet service; part of bid to close digital gaps | Education

The Lafayette Parish School System and Love Our Schools opened the parish’s first-ever in-home internet assistance program to applications Monday, one move in a broader plan to make the internet more accessible to all students.

The in-home internet assistance program is open to families with LPSS students who attend a community eligibility provision (CEP) school or who qualify for free or reduced price lunch, and haven’t had home internet access since at least July 1, an LPSS release said.

“Since many of our students will engage in some form of virtual learning for this school year, it is incumbent upon us to do all that we can to help that learning and growth continue and thrive while at home — ensuring internet access for all of our students is a huge step in that direction,” Superintendent Irma Trosclair said in a prepared statement.

Not providing gadgets, Net to poor students is digital apartheid: HC

Destiny Viator

The Delhi high court on Friday directed private as well as government schools like KVs to provide gadgets and an internet package to poor students for online classes, saying not doing so amounts to “discrimination” and creates a “digital apartheid”.

To separate such students from others in the same class due to non-availability of a gadget or a device would generate “a feeling of inferiority” that may “affect their hearts and minds unlikely ever to be undone”, the court said.

A bench of Justices Manmohan and Sanjeev Narula said if a school decides to voluntarily provide synchronous face-to-face real time online education as a method of teaching, “they will have to ensure that the students belonging to economically weaker section (EWS) or disadvantaged group (DG) category also have access and are able to avail

Book finds digital expectations for students impacted by race, class

Destiny Viator

Matt Rafalow, a visiting scholar at UC Berkeley, recently published a book describing how race and class impact teachers’ digital expectations for their students

For “Digital Divisions: How Schools Create Inequality in the Tech Era,” Rafalow researched three middle schools in California, each equipped with similar technological infrastructure but composed of different demographic makeups.

While the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has recently given rise to conversations about digital learning in many communities, Rafalow’s research was conducted many years prior, during the 2013-2014 academic year.

Technological use, even video games and social media, was viewed by teachers at a school largely composed of wealthy, white students as being “essential to learning,” Rafalow said in an email.

According to Rafalow, at a middle-class, predominantly Asian American school, teachers viewed their students’ use of technology as “threatening” to learning.

Lastly, at a school where Latino students from mainly working-class families made

When I am shooting macros on a flat surface I would like a tool like this to assist me. I want something that starts as a flat pane B-C or A2 to C but very easily moves to be A to C with a number of incremental steps en-route. The camera will sit on the A to C plane preferably supported at the C/bottom end. I currently achieve the same purpose with some balancing of objects but nothing I use easily moves from the lower to the upper plane . If i am shooting, insects sudden movement is not a good thing. I feel there must be a commonly used object or a specialised item that will do this for me but I can’t think of anything. Any ideas.
