On Wednesday, the right-wing news aggregation website Revolver.news published an “exclusive” article calling on law enforcement officials to open fire on protesters in Louisville and elsewhere. While many right-wing media outlets and commentators have echoed calls for “law and order,” what make the Revolver article of interest is the name of one of its biggest promoters…
The article by Revolver, published on Wednesday, was written in response to the violent protests in Louisville following the Breonna Taylor grand jury announcement. The article, which starts off by saying “it’s time to consider the unthinkable,” calls on Kentucky officials to use deadly force to quell the unrest.
“The [Department of Justice] and local police forces could take some inspiration from the words of President Trump: ‘When the looting starts, the shooting starts.’ If violent riots break out in Louisville in the days to come, authorities have a moral duty to stop those riots with force, including deadly force if necessary.”
The article goes on to discuss the Breonna Taylor grand jury announcement and aftermath, interspersing social media posts among the commentary. The article then concludes with a provocative call to arms against what it refers to as “evil behavior” of Black Lives Matter and other protestors.
“The principle concern of our society is to uphold and defend law abiding citizens, families, and communities. But that will only happen if we refuse to accept or coddle evil behavior, and we obliterate violent displays of Antifa and BLM with the heavy, righteous and just hammer of law and order,” the article states.
It concludes: “Louisville can set an example for the country in the days to come: If our nation wishes to stay happy, prosperous, and safe, rioters must be crushed completely with the full weight of the American justice system. Our civilization will only ever be as strong as our will and resolve to defend it. Let the shooting start.”
Aside from its inflammatory content, Revolver is also notable for one of its apparent readers — President Trump. Earlier in September the President seemingly endorsed Revolver in a Tweet attacking another online news website, The Drudge Report.
“Our people have all left Drudge. He is a confused MESS, has no clue what happened,” Trump tweeted last week. “Down 51%. @DRUDGE They like REVOLVER and others!”
Trump’s reference to “our people” is presumably a reference to his political supporters. The President did not offer any evidence to support his claim about Drudge’s readership, but it was the second time in September that Trump’s Twitter feed mentioned Revolver. Earlier in the month he retweeted a post by Representative Paul Gosar (R-AZ) promoting the website.
With the President himself continuing to call for a crackdown on the increasingly violent racial justice protests that have swept the nation, Revolver’s article adds more fiery rhetoric to an already combustible situation. By calling on law enforcement to open fire on protesters, Revolver is staking out a dangerous position that is both incendiary and irresponsible….
Just like its audience and endorser in the White House.
